what are the pros and cons of taking melatonin?

1 doctor answer
Dr. Maria Guerra
6 years experience Pharmacology
Not for all insomnia: Melatonin is natural and not addictive like some prescription sleep medications. It works best for people who are trying to get a normal sleeping pattern that was interrupted due to traveling (time zone changes), working graveyard shift, etc. The only cons is that it isn't as effective for other types of insomnia, like to help fall asleep quickly or to fall asleep and stay asleep.
