what could a sudden change in bowel habits entail? i haven't been regular for a month, despite changing my diet.

Change in diet: Whole host of things it could entail. Have you been traveling? Certainly a change in diet could do it. At your age would recommend adding fiber and seeing if it does not improve and if not see a gastroenterologist for further evaluation and treatment.
