The important ...: ... question is how quickly is the pain and swelling of the gum progressing? What you describe is most likely an infection. The faster it worsens, the quicker your friend needs antibiotics from the dentist to treat it. While minor infections may resolve spontaneously with more thorough cleaning of the area, not all do. Over-the-counter pain meds only hide the pain warning of a looming problem.

Pain: Pain is a red flag your body is waving to alert you to a serious problem, in the mouth that often means infection. Pain killers such as Ibuprofen may temporarily dull the pain, but will not cure the cause. Make sure to get to a Dentist immediately.
