Maybe: Veins in the neck can be prominent for many normal or abnormal reasons. You should show your doctor who can put this in context with a physical exam.

It is not uncommon for neck veins to become prominent and two sides may be completely different. Most of the time these prominent veins are normal. F/U with your med MD.

A 19-year-old female asked:

I've been noticing both my veins in my neck are permanently bulging even if i don't speak. Is it normal? How can I make it smaller again?

Normal Veins: Veins are an important part of the circulation that carries blood back from tissues and organs to the heart to be sent for cleaning. The fact that both sides appear larger suggests this is probably not a problem. Tonsillitis and speaking have little to no effect on the veins. If you are thin or work out, your veins may tend to appear "larger" when in fact, they really do not do so.

Normal: Neck veins distend when we lie with our head lower than our heart or when we strain. With straining, the pressure within the chest increases and the blood flow through the neck veins decrease resulting in them enlarging. This is normal. Levels of hydration, genetics, outside temperature and any increase in pressure within the chest will enlarge the neck veins. Your veins are most likely normal.

That is : Most probably your external jugular vein seen in certain people you shout, or blow into a trumpet. It means nothing. However in people who have heart problems or other chest pathology any little effort even speaking can make those veins on the side of your neck to bulge. To be sure go to check it out, see a professional.
