what is the cure for a fractured rib?

Pain management: The first priority is pain management. Medications are your best option for this. The healing is 6 to 8 weeks in most cases. Pain can be expected during this entire time. It is difficult to sleep laying flat. Try sleeping almost sitting up.

Time: Most rib fractures will heal over time with no treatment needed. Most care is supportive, trying to stay comfortable until healing occurs.

What should you do with a fractured clavicle?

It depends: The treatment of clavicle fractures has evolved quite a lot over the last decade. The orphic peaty community used to believe that everyone did well as long as their fracture healed. We now know that is not the case. There are many instances where surgery is needed to realign the fracture fragments. That being said, a number of fractures are still managed in a sling, without surgery.

How can you treat a fractured clavicle?

Dr. Steven Hill

Usually splinted: Usually this is treated by either immobilizing the shoulder in a sling or use of various splints - commonly a "figure 8" splint pulls back on the clavicle on each side and helps to relieve pain.

How are Fosamax (alendronate) and femur fractures related?

Dr. Robert Lang

2 answers: In patients who are truly at high risk for a hip fracture, Fosamax (alendronate) will decrease the risk of a fracture by 50%. However, in about 1 person in 1000-5000 there will be an increased risk because the medication is too strong. The current recommendation by many experts is to not use this type of medication for prevention unless you are high risk for a fracture.
Dr. William Banks Hinshaw

I agree. The use of this medication is persons at low risk (by the FRAX algorithm) markedly increases the probability of shifting the risk/benefit ratio toward the risk side. I would add, that as the hip fracture reduction attributed to Fosamax was a 3-year trial (called FIT) and the benefit was not sustained in a longer 10-year study (called FLEX), duration of therapy is also of serious concern

Cushing's: Sorry to hear about the Cushing's. Cushing's can be controlled but care of the rib fractures is essential. Make sure you are referred to a lung specialist. He/she may help you and may also refer you to a surgeon for further evaluation and care. Do not delay!
