A 32-year-old female asked:

what is a normal sugar level for pregnancy?

Depends: It depends on where the sugar is measured and when. For example are you asking about sugar in urine or in blood? if you are asking about blood sugar, it depends on when it measured. There are different recommended levels for fasting blood sugars as well as blood sugars pre-meal and post meal. Ask your question again with more specific details, including if you have gestational diabetes.

What really matters: What you really want to ask is: how well does my body while pregnant break down carbohydrates (sugar)? This is routinely tested during 24 to 28 weeks of pregnancy, when women drink a defined amount of glucose (e.g., 50 grams) and then have their glucose level taken an hour later. If at that time glucose levels exceed 140 mg/dl (140 mg%), more testing is needed; below that you are in good shape.

Limited data: There is very limited information to suggest that artificial sweeteners are dangerous for pregnancy. If you are concerned and not diabetic, natural sugar is probably the safest alternative.

That depends: Glucose challenge screening (24th to 28th weeks) should be under 130-140 1 hr after drinking a concentrated sugar beverage. Fasting glucose test & glucose tolerance test can also be done.

How much sugar is too much in pregnancy?

Eat healthily: There is no specific amount of sugar. You should generally try to eat healthily. You should get a fasting glucose test in your second trimester which will show if your body is having difficulty handling sugar, and at that point your doctor will tell you if you need to change your diet.

After my pregnancy as soon as I have a sweet or something sweet I want to fall asleep, my sugar levels are in normal range.

Somnolence: Taking a break from the constant activity required in the care of a newborn, plus the tasks of normal housekeeping or employment can provoke sleepiness even without consumption of "sweets". It is the planned break in activity which allows a sleep deprived individual to naturally reclaim sleep time, not sweets, per se.
