i've heard that eating fruit during or after the main meal is not good for digestion. ferments then causes gas and bloating.

Fruit may cause gas: There are some fruits/vegetables that are complex and can lead to gas/bloating. They are called FODMAP; examples are apples, pears... also broccoli, asparagus, brussel sprouts. You can look up the diet and avoid those if they bother your stomach. Otherwise the rest are ok to eat.
