Low salt/exercise: The best ways to avoid edema are to go on a very low salt (sodium) restricted diet and to do a lot of walking. The foods to avoid on a low salt diet are any prepared foods or processed foods. Fresh and frozen foods usually are low sodium. Walking frequently and moving your legs will help your veins return the fluid back up from your legs.
