Pleurisy: Your description really sounds like you have pleurisy. Pleurisy is an inflammation of the lining of the lungs after a viral or bacterial infection. It usually responds well to anti inflammatory treatment and time. Occassionally other sources of pain with breathing include fractured ribs and collapse of the lung (known as a pneumothorax) or inflammation of the rib cage (costrachondritis).

Needs to be seen: Can only answer that question by examining your husband. Could be anything from muscle spasm to pneumonia, blood clot in lung (pulmonary embolism), or other stuff.

Hmmm: If you are having shorteness of breath then go to a doctor right away. If not then may be costo chronditis. Try Ibuprofen for a few days and if not improved go see a physician.
