i am allergic to opiates (including semisynthetics and synthetics). would it be safe to take a benzodiazepine (xanax) for anxiety?

Probably: The opioids work through different neuronal circuits and receptors than the benzodiazepines. Depending on what you mean by allergic, it may be safe for you. You may have side effects to opioids, which is very different than being allergic. Please discuss this in detail with your treating physician. There are many treatments available for anxiety.
