A 43-year-old member asked:

what can i expect when having a vagal nerve stimulation device operation?

General Anesthesia: The implantation of a vagal nerve stimulator is done for a variety of reasons. It has been used for seizures and depression. From the patient's point of view the surgery results in a small incision under the left clavicle, and one in the neck. The stimulator and its scar looks very similar to the one used in pacemakers. Usually a general anesthetic is used for the procedure.

VNS surgery: is done as an outpatient under general anesthesia. The procedure takes about an hour. Two incisions are made, one just under the collar bone on the left for the device (it is placed under the skin on top of the muscle). A second incision is made in the neck to attach the lead to the vagus nerve in the carotid sheath. The device is tested before plastic surgery is done to close. Home in 2-3 hrs.

Not necessarily : It depends on the health of your grandmother and the type of fracture that she sustained. Some can be repaired simply and others require a more invasive procedure. If the risk is great because she has poor health they may hold on surgery. If she is a healthy 87 yo then they would operate. My 105 yo grandmother had hers repaired at age 85. She was active till 105. Hope she is ok.

Go to: Another surgeon. Many of today's surgeons are trained laparoscopically but are not so confident in open procedures. Older surgeons are more experienced in both, since they started with open procedures and then they adopted laparoscopic ones.

Yes: Casting for 6-8 weeks and therapy works for most. Slightly higher re- tear rates without surgical repair. But, no risk of surgery.
