A 36-year-old member asked:

How strong is Valium or diazepam?

Strong based on dose: Diazepam is usually prescribed in 2.5, 5 or 10 mg doses. The effect of the medication is dose dependent. It is a "rescue" mediciation, not a controller. If you are panicky, it will help you to relax. But there are medications which can help to prevent those anxious feelings in the first place, ssris. Never use diazepam with alcohol!
A 37-year-old member asked:

How long could you take diazepam (valium) before the drug is useless?

Longer than U think: If taken orally (as most people do) it takes the average young healthy person about a day to get rid of half the drug they took. This metabolism is prolonged further with use of alcohol. So best advice.... Several days would be a safe interval.

I'm frightened of flying will diazepam (valium) help?

Yes, but no alcohol: Diazepam will help to deal with anxiety about flying. Do not take with alcohol. It would also be helpful to have a guided imagery recording on your ipod, which will help you to relax more naturally. If you must fly often, you should consider working with a therapist to de-sensitize yourself and work on your phobia.

Not so: Valium is not destined to become useless. Some people develop tolerance but most don't the time course is related to symptoms and if one is symptom free, then the suggestion is that you talk to your doctor about weaning off, but talk to your doctor before stopping.
