Varies : It depends on whether or not you had an injury. With an in injury it could be many things, from a knee sprain to a cartilage or ligament tear. Without an injury, it could be an infection, gout, or any number of rheumatoid like problems. Either way it sounds like you need a work up for knee pain in the mean time, ice, anti inlammatories and an off the shelf brace may help.

Treatment varies: Depending on the diagnosis, treatment options may include rest, ice, compression and elevation, bracing, injection, pain medication, anti-inflammatory medication, physical therapy, and possible arthroscopic or open surgery.

Knee pain: Many possible reasons - most commonly overuse. Less likely arthritis flare, infection, bursitis. Treat with conservative measures - RICE: rest, ice (at 15 min intervals), compression (ace wrap or support, remove at bedtime), elevation. If no allergy, take ibuprofen 400 mg every 8 hours with food.
