See below: False trace results for ketones on urinalysis strips may occur with highly pigmented urine specimens or those containing large amounts of Levodopa metabolites. Compounds such as Mesna (2-mercaptoethane sulfonic acid) that contain sulfhydryl groups may cause false positive results or an atypical color reaction.

Depends on reason: Ketones increase in patients who have poorly controlled type 1 diabetes but also increases in non diabetics who are starved, on high protein diet, or who abuse alcohol. The treatment of the first is to control the blood sugar well and follow doctors instructions to the dot. Otherwise, the treatment is by removing the cause. Whether it is diet or alcohol related.

Who is Ketone?: Self testing for ketones in the urine in the workplace is a reasonable accommodation for people with diabetes to determine if their blood sugars are so far out of control that they may slip into ketoacidosis.

Why are ketone bodies produced?

Lack of carbs: Glucose is the normal fuel for the body. If there is inadequate glucose (derived from the breakdown of carbohydrate) or if in the case of diabetes the glucose can't get into the cell due to Insulin lack/dysfunction the body will then burn fat and/or protein to make glucose. This results in the build up of ketones.
