For glaucoma to be caught early does that mean there must be no optic nerve damage?

Hopefully on routine: Eye exams include intraocular pressure readings, and, if you have done this, there is this little green light. You don't need to have damage, just increased intraocular pressure, and treatment can decrease the pressure, and prevent optic nerve damage, so real good reason for regular eye checkups.

No: It is not glaucoma until damage to the optic nerve is determined. It would only be suspect until that time.

Not necessarily...: Glaucoma is the 'sneak thief of sight' and usually causes damage that occurs gradually but permanently. It's important that people at risk come in for regular exams so it can be diagnosed, and the damage 'nipped in the bud'. There can be some nerve damage incurred by the time glaucoma is caught relatively early, but the good news is the patient won't likely notice that their vision is affected.

A 58-year-old female asked:

In early glaucoma what would be considered minimal optic nerve damage?

No loss of function : Minimal optic nerve damage seen in early glaucoma is a structural change with or without visual field loss, depending on how the nerve is structurally changed. A visual field defect therefore isn't necessary to have in early glaucoma. Minimal nerve damage may show up as asymmetry, cup elongation, nerve fiber layer thinning, focal notching or excavation, vessel deformation, and other.
