It can: For several reasons, patients with ibd are at risk for malnutrition and weight loss. We call this failure to thrive. The inflammation of the lining of the intestine can result in poor absorption of nutrients and vitamins. The chronic inflammation has a high metabolic cost. It burns up calories. Keeping the disease under control, with medication and proper diet helps.

IBD: Such as crohn's or ulcerative colitis can cause malabsorption and severe weight loss including muscle mass. This can be life threatening. If your disease is not controlled medically you may need to be evaluated for surgical intervention. Please see a GI doctor or colorectal surgeon and discuss your situation.
