Just like any visit: If you mean that you are having root canal therapy there is little to do. If you are having pain you should be taking pain relieving medication and possibly antibiotics if you have an infection. It's not necessary to take antibiotics before your treatment. After the visit the dentist will suggest medications and provide you with instructions. Usually there are no restrictions after care.

Relief: Regarding endo tooth abscess or perio gum abscess, relief with pain and inflammation subsided due to abscence of infection after the treatment. Antibiotic may be given before and continue after the treatment. Bone loss will partially be reverse, depend on how long the abscess is left untreated. Occlusion must be addressed for the long term success of the treatment.
