are prescription knee braces really better than the over-the-counter ones?

Many are: Braces such as off-loading braces for arthritis and braces designed to stabilize the acl are better than over the counter braces. Custom braces are fitted to the patient and are engineered to perform a specific task. Over the counter braces are ok for simple sprains, contusions, etc.

Possibly: Check with your doctor. Be careful wearing anything too tight which may cause compression of the extremity. If you are on a blood thinner then your doctor may let you wear a brace applied relatively looser than usual.
