Infection: A cough that is productive of discolored sputum is consistent with a lower respiratory infection like pneumonia or bronchitis. Alternatively, significant postnasal drip of mucus can be coughed up. A physician can assess the need for antibiotics and whether a chest x-ray would be helpful.
