Apain in my ankle seems to get more uncomfortable. surgery has been advised but is it necessary for torn ligament and how long is the recovery?

Depends: If your ankle is unstable because of the torn ligament then surgery is indicated. Also the torn ligament can cause pain especially if it gets pinched in the ankle. Without knowing exact diagnosis, it is difficult to tell if surgery is needed or not and what recovery is. But for a ligament reconstruction it is about 3 months.

Sorry: There just isn't enough information here to give you an intelligent answer. Most minor ligament tears will eventually heal with rest and some sort of immobilization, but more severe injuries can require surgery. Post-op healing varies with the complexity of the repair. Figure on at least 6-8 weeks of relative inactivity after surgery. Get a second opinion if you aren't comfortable with the first.
