CPK and DMD: Duchenne muscular dystrophy is a muscle wasting disease and CPK levels generally reflect the amount of active muscle destruction present at any one time. If your levels dropped, that means that there is, at the moment, less activity going on. Having said that, the disease is still an unrelenting, progressive disorder, and it will not go away.

It does not: The CPK values in Duchenne's are generally quite high, but they will fluctuate. As the disease gets worse, they will tend to go down as there is less muscle mass. The progress of this illness in inexorable and the only real hope is that eventually gene therapy will work as it has for other illnesses.

Dr. Kaveh Niknia
Dentistry 22 years experience
Same, both Dentists: Dds stands for doctor of dental surgery, and dmd stands for doctor of dental medicine. All graduates from an accredited us dental school will have one degree or the other depending on the school of graduation. Historically, before dental education was regulated, there were slight differences between the two degrees. Currently, the degrees are equivalent bearing equal rights and privileges.

Is dmd dentist more qualified than a dds?

Dr. Craig Fisk
Dentistry 12 years experience
They are the same: Dmd and dds are the two degrees that are offered to dentists in the usa. Dmd vs dds is determined by the state's law. For example, a dentist graduating from massachusetts will always receive a dmd and a graduate from new york will always get a dds. All the credentials are exactly the same and both are allowed all practicing privileges in all 50 states once they pass their board certification.

A 35-year-old female asked:

What do elevated CPK levels mean when exercise is not a factor?

Dr. Nancy Mellow
Internal Medicine 44 years experience
Muscle or heart : CPK can be released from damaged or inflamed muscles, including the heart muscle. Some muscle diseases that cause weakness and pain in the muscles can elevate cpk, as can any muscle injury (including an injection into the muscle). Heart attacks and other heart muscle injury or inflammation can also raise the cpk. There are tests to determine the source of the cpk. ("fractionation" of cpk).

A 35-year-old member asked:

What does a creatine kinase level of 322 indicate?

Dr. Gurmukh Singh
Pathology 49 years experience
Muscle injury: Ck level of 322 is elevated but not too high. Elevated levels of ck indicate muscle injury, however strenous physical activity will raise ck levels, especially if activity is done prior to blood draw. Some medications and alcohol can casue ck elevation.

Dr. Singh is correct. If you are athletic, and feel well, there is no reason to be concerned.
