A brief answer: You should see your endocrinologist for both conditions. Steroid is usually the first line treatment for this type of encephalopathy. Thyroidectomy eliminates risk of thyroid cancer that can arise from hashimoto thyroiditis. Risks of thyroid surgery are hoarseness, hypoparathyroidism, anesthetic risk and a scar on lower neck.
