Better techinque!: Red eye is simply the light from a flash or other light source reflecting back from the retina of your eye through your dilated pupil. Some cameras have a method to shrink your pupil to reduce the "red reflex". Talk to a trained photographer for techniques to help you. Not a medical problem but a medical/biological reason. Hope you are not "seeing red" due to my answer!

A 46-year-old member asked:
Why do some people get red eye in flash pictures and some don't?

Pupil size: Red eye is the actual color of the back of the eye. It appears black because the light behind your head is blocked by your head and no light escapes the eye you are looking at. In a flash photo, the light source is almost in line with the lense and so red eye can occur. It is more likely if the pupil is larger and in kids because they like to look at lights. Adults look away if possible.

A 34-year-old member asked:
How come some people's eyes show up with 'red eye' in pictures?

Dr. Glenn Pomerance answered

Normal: The flash on some cameras is so close to the lens of the camera that light reflects off the retina and gives something eyemds actually like to see, the "red reflex". Although annoying in pictures (it can be "photo-shopped" out), it indicates a healthy eye. Absence of a red reflex in adults can mean cataract or retinal detachment and in young children cataracts, tumors or misalignment of the eyes.
