Multiple reasons: There are many hormonal reasons - thyroid disease, elevated prolactin levels, polycycstic ovarian syndrome, ovarian failure. To know you would really need an evaluation by an obgyn or a fertility specialist. Everyone should be evaluated at least once if their periods are irregular.

Not sure: Reasons for irregularity include weight gain or loss, breastfeeding, alcohol use, eating disorders, marked emotional stress, endometriosis, uterine fibroids, cervical polyps, polycystic ovarian syndrome, excessive exercise & pregnancy. When a girl has just started menstruating & around the time of menopause periods can be irregular.

Are irregular periods a sign of infertility?

In a way, yes: Irregular periods can happen for a number of reasons. Generally speaking, if you miss a period that means a mid cycle ovulation did not take place which in turn means no chance for the egg to be fertilized by a sperm. Check with your doctor if further testing is needed to ensure your ovaries are in good shape and that all the hormones necessary to regulate your cycle are intact. Diary will help.

Why is there irregular bleeding in perimenopause?

Hormonal changes: Around menopause, some of the hormones in a woman's body which normally vary in a very predictable way start to change. The fluctuations are not as normal, and sometimes may not even occur. Ovaries produce less estrogen and the brain senses certain changes and tries to compensate. This in turn can affect bleeding patterns. Bleeding can be closer together, farther apart, heavier or even lighter.

What can I do to address super sensitive skin?

Fragrance free : I initially start out by placing my patients on products which are fragrance free. I will have them wash with a gentle soap like dove followed by an all over moisturizer like aveeno (oatmeal). I also have them use a fragrance free laundry soap like all-free and no fabric softeners or dryer sheets. If the above measures are not helping then patch testing can be done. I hope this helps. Is it safe to have unprotected sex with an irregular period?

No: Unprotected intercourse can put you at risk of sexually transmitted diseases as well as unwanted pregnancy. Especially with irregular periods it is difficult to estimate when are you ovulating and what are the most “fertility days” in your cycle.

Testing: Irregular periods are either due to hormonal problems or anatomical problems. Your doctor can order appropriate tests to figure out your problem and correct the condition. Tests can include blood work and ultrasound.
