A 33-year-old member asked:

what are the steps taken to cure someone of antisocial personality disorder?

Wish to change: Work with a therapist to discover the causation and develop tools for better communication skills. Often apd results from early disfunctional family interactions, which lead to low self esteem, and a felt need to protect oneself from anticipated rejection. Identifying positive aspects of yourself may allow you to be more comfortable, hence less defensive in relation to others.

Antisocial: The hallmark of this disorder is the person seems to have no conscience, or sense of morality, or right or wrong. This person cannot empathize with others, is opportunistic, predatory, and often thrill seeking. An example of this would be Charles Manson. There generally is no "curing" these people, as they are extremely resistant to treatment.

What techniques do professionals use when working with someone who suffers from a borderline personality disorder?

There are many: One of the more popular therapies is dialectical behavior therapy where patients are urged to use their "wise mind" to slow down and not make snap judgments about people or situations. These therapies teach patients through self reflection to see the world in less hostile terms. More functional behavior patterns can be learned.

Compassion: This is a mental disease and people who suffer from it are sick. Loved ones need to be long on patience but firm on limit setting. Being supportive goes along way. Families should not subject themseves to physical, sexual, or verbal abuse. If the patient puts anyone in the family at risk for harm, they may need to be hospitalized or have law enforcement intervene.

Is there a treatment for narcissitic personality disorders?

Yes: Personality disorders start in early adulthood and are often hard to treat. There are no fda approved medications. There are numerous skilled therapists who are adept at various psychotherapeutic techniques that can help you realize how your behaviors impact you and those around you. Through self reflection, some of the behaviors can be changed.
A 43-year-old member asked:

Are personality disorders often similar?

Some are-some aren't: Dsm IV put 10 personality dx’s (pds) into three categories (reflecting similarities). A pd was defined as a long-term & pervasive pattern of disturbed behavior. The new dsm 5 formulation describes 6 pds (antisocial, avoidant, borderline, narcissistic, OCD & schizotypal) and requires a rating of five personality traits (negative affect, detachment, antagonism, disinhibition & psychoticism).
