Don't try it, Norma: Please don't try to change the color of your skin. Sunscreen can prevent darkening from tanning. But any chemicals that you try to use will disfigure you -- it simply will not look right or natural. In the US, which sets world trends, judging by skin color is the hallmark of the worst ignorance. Embrace whatever Nature gave you, and remember that good looks are 95% fitness, which you control.

Avoid sunlight : avoiding direct sunlight and tan bed are the best way. Don't use bleaching medications. Anyway, you should be happy with whatever skin tone you have.

Sun exposure: The less sun exposure , the lighter the skin. The usual sunscreen may not be that effective in preventing tanning even if it contains a lot of zinc or titanium. Use an umbrella or wear a wide-brim hat when outdoors may help. You can get tanned even when the light is filtered by the window glass. There are chemicals to bleach the skin but they are not natural by any means.

Less tan: For lighter skin – always protect your skin. 1. Use a broad spectrum sun screen with a high SPF. Apply as often as needed. 2. Wears hat or other clothing to protect skin from Sun’s UV rays. 3. Try to avoid mid-day sun. A medication like hydroquinone may take months to work and usually it’s use would be limited to a particular area of the body.

Lighter skin color: there are topical creams that work to a certain degree. Then you can do light/laser treatments or chemical peels. Always use sun block to maximize your efforts!
