Widely recommeded: Prevention of illness is the best treatment and influenza is more serious for some people, including those with asthma. Most people tolerate the flus shot just fine without complications. Do not take the shot if you are allergic to a compnent of the vaccine, .

No controversy...: Someone with asthma is someone who really needs the inactivated flu vaccine (the shot) each and every year. Perhaps some of the confusion lies in the fact that someone with asthma should not receive the live attenuated flu vaccine delivered via nasal spray (flumist).

Safe and important!: Asthmatics, like pregnant women and the elderly, are most likely to have severe cases of flu, with complications that can even be fatal. As far as any myths you might have heard, the flu shot has no actual flu virus in it and cannot give you the flu. It has some proteins from the virus that stimulate your own immunity. It might not totally prevent the flu but can make the illness much less severe.

Which one: The nasal vaccine (not the injection) is not advised for asthmatics. Part of the way it works is to get into the system through the lungs, and it triggers a bit of irritation to do this.It put one of my patients who never had an asthma attack, only bronchitis, into the hospital for several days with an asthma attack. If you have asthma, get the shot.
