Can hospital tests detect something major before pleuritis gets worse?

Yes, talk to the MD: It is important for the doctor to know what other symptoms (cough, fever, being short of breath, chest pain, etc.) go along with the pleuritis and whether they are getting worse or better. Special xrays and other tests can see what's wrong and whether it is getting better or worse.
