Restorations: Braces don't stain teeth. Not cleaning around the braces can result in damage next to the braces. Eating hard, sticky, chewy foods can break the sealer between the braces and the tooth and allow bacteria to get behind the braces and damage the teeth. Obviously proper oral hygiene and diet choices can reduce risk of damage. Restorations may be required if teeth are damaged.

Why?: I'm curious why you have to 'convince' your dentist to let you have braces. If your dentist feels that you do not need them or more importantly that you should not have them, there must be some reason. If we had more information we could give you a better answer to your question. Two possible reasons not to have orthodontic treatment are periodontal (gum) problems & high caries index.

Reason?: What reason has your dentist given you not to have orthodontic treatment? Age is no barrier. Untreated gum disease, untreated decay, or some systemic diseases can contraindicated orthodontic treatment until controlled. It may be that your dentist does braces rx but feels your problem is beyond his comfort level. I would recommend that you see an orthodontic specialist for an opinion.
