A 44-year-old member asked:

what can i do to fix braces stains?

Restorations: Braces don't stain teeth. Not cleaning around the braces can result in damage next to the braces. Eating hard, sticky, chewy foods can break the sealer between the braces and the tooth and allow bacteria to get behind the braces and damage the teeth. Obviously proper oral hygiene and diet choices can reduce risk of damage. Restorations may be required if teeth are damaged.

Fluoride, fillings: The stains you talk about are not due to your braces. They are due to poor oral hygiene habits while wearing your braces. You will notice that your teeth are of good color and density where the brackets were attached to your teeth. The stains are around the periphery of the brackets where the plaque sat too long, demineralizing your teeth and causing the stains. Fluoride and restorations.

Many reasons: There are so many possible reasons including stains from coffee, tea, smoking; medications like Peridex (chlorhexidine gluconate) rinse; or simply that the dark braces give a reflective cast of darkness to the tooth that is not a permanent change at all. More serious discoloration may be from poor hygiene as described by other doctors here. Recalcification of enamel is limited in some instances or restorations.

Retainers: Once the bite is correct and all of your teeth are straight the dentist will remove all of the brackets and adhesive that held your brackets. After you are cleaned up he will take impressions for retainers that you will wear all the time for 6 months then nightly for many years. Some offices place permanent wires behind your upper and lower 6 front teeth however makes it difficult to floss and kee.

2-3 days: It will take a few days for your lips and cheeks to get used to the feel of the braces and for your teeth to adjust to the 'pressure'. Most patients feel they can eat normally again between 2-3 days after the placement of new braces.

What would you suggest I do to convince my dentist to let me have braces?

Many factors: Many factors go into the decision to proceed with orthodontic care... Your post contains no info on your oral health, your occlusion, or your treatment objectives. You can't convince your dentist to start ortho care if he does not deems it appropriate for your mouth. Have this dentist explain his/her reasoning.
