Yes: Asthma is when there is wheezing as heard by a stethoscope, besides any tests. If your doctor has heard this sound, particularly on more than one occasion, they can confidently say there is asthma, without any tests.

Hard to say: Wheezing is a sound common to asthma and bronchiolitis as well as several other lower respiratory infections. About 75% of the wheezing infants quit by the age of 4-5 and do not wheeze as older kids or adults. Since Asthma is a specific label for a potential lifelong condition, I never use it in infants or toddlers unless I have something specific to go on.Family history, eczema, etc.
