A 38-year-old female asked:

does the blood test for ra have false negatives?

Clarify: Done correctly, the test simply tells whether rheumatoid factor is present in the blood. Around 25% of people with obvious rheumatoid arthritis never develop rheumatoid factor in the blood. Rheumatology has many labs but all are ancillary to the history and physical exam. As a pathologits -- "treat the person, not the numbers.".

A 37-year-old member asked:

Is there a blood test for lupus?

Dr. Angus Worthing

Yes: There is a simple blood test for lupus called an "ana" (for antinuclear antibody). It is positive, or detectable, in about 20% of healthy people, so it is only helpful as an initial screening. A doctor can ask questions, perform a physical exam and order further tests to figure out if a positive test indicates lupus. A negative test is very reassuring.

Depends: There are hundreds, if not thousands, of different blood tests. The choice of tests is dictated by the disorder suspected. It would be prudent to ask your doctor about the tests s/he is planning to do.
