To confirm blockage: Essure is a permanent sterilization procedure in which "plugs" are inserted into each of the two fallopian tubes, by going in through the vagina-cervix-uterus. The fallopian tubes get sealed off by its inner lining growing into the "plugs". Three months after insertion, a hysterosalpingogram (dye is squirted into the uterus to see if any flows beyond the "plugs") can verify the tubes are blocked.

Essure: After the essure sterilization, the tubes are not closed right away. The x-ray is to make sure that the tubes are closed before you stop using birth control. If the x-ray shows closed tubes, the success rate of the procedure is 99.7%.

Confirm occlusion: Tissue needs to grow around the device and block the tube. This usually takes about 3 months. Some people take longer. So if your tube is still open at 3 months you will need to continue to use birth control and repeat the test 3 months later. There is a chance that even then the tube may be open at which point you have to accept that the procedure did not work for you and use alternate methods.

Confirmation : Currently, 12 weeks after the essure procedure, a special x-ray (hsg) is done to confirm that the tubes are in fact closed. This is partly what has allowed essure to have the lowest failure rate over other methods. Some, including myself, have published on sonogram as a confirmation test rather than the hsg. This is still considered investigational, though. So, the hsg is currently the standard.
