A 23-year-old female asked:

i broke both my pinky toes, the doctor taped them and gave me post op shoes, do i absolutely have to wear them all the time? or is there a different less horrible looking shoe i can get?

Yes: The purpose of a post-op shoe is immobilization. This both serves to immobilize the fracture and encourages healing as well as increase comfort with weight bearing. A shoe with a wide toe box and a stiff sole would also serve this purpose. Many of my patients find clogs suit their needs.

Rigid sole shoe: You need a rigid sole shoe. Different companies make them. You only need to wear them when you are walking. The shoes are designed to limit your ability to bend the toes.

Why does my calf hurt when I stand on my toes?

Tight Calf Muscles!: The reason your calf hurts is how tight the entire muscle group is. When you stand on your toes, the calf muscle contracts, and if it is tight, then you may have pain. Performing runners' stretches are very beneficial and should help reduce the pain. If it continues, seek medical treatment with a podiatrist.

I obsessivly pick sores on my hands and scalp, why can't I stop even though it hurts? Is it anxiety or something else?

Something else: If it 's not irritation (itching) then you probably have dermatillomania, which is just a fancy way of saying you obsessively pick at yourself. This is thought to be related to obsessive-compulsive disorder & may improve on an ssri antidepressant. Cognitive-behavioral therapy might also help. You could also try wearing a hat & gloves (kidding). Anxiety makes it worse.

Yes: Certain materials may not absorb sweat and may give off a bad odor. Also if the shoe doesn't "breathe".

ACTIVITY RELATED: Finger numbness is possibly a symptom of carpal tunnel syndrome. An evaluation by your doctor and possibly nerve conduction studies should be entertained.
