Genetic/ infectious: Most sensory loss is either sight, vision or smell. Infections such as cytomegalovirus or rubella can cause hearing loss or blindness, and neonatal sepsis can cause sensory loss. Use of aminoglycoside antibiotics in the newborn period can damage hearing, and prematurity is responsible for multiple issues. Many genetic conditions can lead to blindness, loss of hearing, and loss of smell.
