Gradual improvement: Every patient will recover at their own pace following a knee replacement. Healthy signs include gradual reduction in pain and swelling around the knee; gradual improvement in the range of motion or flexibility of the new joint; and gradual resumption of day=to=day activities. Work in partnership with your orthopaedic surgeon and physical therapist to gauge your progress.

Gradual improvement: The skin incision will be healed within a few weeks. The soft tissues beneath the skin will continue to heal for 4-6 months, so you will likely have some stiffness and discomfort for several months with gradual improvement. Range of motion improves for up to 3 months and you should see gradual improvement in movement of the knee and functional abilities (walking, stairs, and other activities).

Research: The orthopaedic community continues to improve outcomes through a variety of avenues. It is necessary to speak to your surgeon directly. After surgery, most people spend 3-4 days in the hospital, and then go home or to an extended rehab stay. Therapy is typically 8-12 weeks. Weight bearing is started immediately, with a rapid transition from a walker to a cane to independant activity.

Varies: There is variation in recovery from a knee reacemrbt based upon the person and surgical technique as well. In general, most patients doing well between 4-12 weeks after surgery. Increased swelling in leg, redness or discharge from incision, or pain that is worsening are among the things that should alert a patient to a potential complication.

6-12 mos total: While one will be walking fairly well after a few weeks. It will takes several months to decrease your pain, regain your motion and strength it can take 6-12 months to achieve full recovery i would suggest doing one side and the other a few weeks later.

TKA recovery time: Usually 2 or so days in hospital. 6 weeks to heal. Next 6 weeks to have muscles and tissues to get used to new motion and freedom--collagen needs to form and adjust in relation to the new lines of stress.
