A 22-year-old male asked:

could being a vegetarian be causing my ibs? i've read that those who return to eating meat have their ibs symptoms go away and have more energy.

Avoid specific foods: Being a vegetarian per se does not worsen ibs, but certain foods that you may be eating more often may aggravate it. No single diet works for everyone, but ibs can be worsened by wheat, dairy, beans/legumes & certain fruits & vegetables. But eggs, nuts, seeds, meats & many fruits & vegies are ok. Multifactorial cause: Irritable bowel syndrome is the multifactorial consequence of hormonal, immune system and nervous system dysfunction resulting from genetic predispositions and dietary and environmental insults. The predominant symptoms like diarrhea cramps constipation are the result of autonomic nervous system instability. A veggie diet especially if high in soy could definitely make your symptoms much worse.

Unusual in babies: Most infants that exhibit signs of gasto-intestinal distress have other conditions such as colick, formula allergy, g.E. Reflux, or rarely other more serious conditions. Ibs is usually a diagnosis of exclusion for an older child with crampy lower abdomenal pain often relieved by passing a bowel movement, and often accompanied by some degree of either constipation or diarrhea.

See below: This is one of those problems where a visit to your doctor is necessary to figure out what's going on. Only after a thorough evaluation, including examination and possibly labs and other tests, can your doctor correctly diagnose you and treat you effectively.
