My five year old boy has a temperature of 39.4 and a barking cough could this be croup if it is what should i do if not croup what could it be?

Croup: This certainly may be croup which is a viral infection that affects the upper part of the airway. The inflammation in this area is the cause of the barky cough. This is treated with cool air and possibly a dose of steroids. There are other more serious conditions that are similiar to croup so you should see a doctor asap. Croup is usually mild and lasts a few days. All kids will get croup.
