A while--and, no.: If your child has worms, how long they go unnoticed can depend both on the type of worm, and type of child. Pinworms, for example, can take 4-6 weeks from actually ingesting the eggs to showing up and causing an itchy bottom. A child who is more sensitive might show more symptoms than one that doesn't mind. These worms are often passed via unwashed hands, not via a messy house!
