is white noise effective as a sleep-aid?

Possibly: White noise, such as a fan in the background, tries to drown out other noises that tend to occur when we sleep. Examples of noises can be creaking of floors, car traffic, etc. For those people who are sensitive to outside noises which may prevent their minds from relaxing enough to be able to sleep, white noise can be helpful. It does not work by making you feel sleepy however.
