Close the Hole: A hernia is a hole in the abdominal wall through which the lining of the abdominal cavity protrudes, creating a sac. Hernias are common in the groin, belly button, upper-midline, or associated w/scars. The exact method of repair varies w/the type & size of the hernia as well as patient-factors, however, the basic principle is the same: close the hole, often using mesh (artificial tissue).

Yes: Lose weight if you are overweight. If you smoke, cut-down or better yet, quit. If you are a diabetic, make sure it is well-controlled. Ask your doctor about stopping blood thinners if you are taking any.

Is mesh safe decades after hernia repair?

Dr. Barry Rosen
General Surgery 34 years experience
Usually: The safety of mesh has to do with the specific material used and what it was placed next to. Some materials thought to be excellent 30 years ago have fallen out of favor. They can create serious adhesions to adjacent structures such as the intestine, leading to bowel obstructions years later. On the other hand, if it hasn't caused problems after 20+ years, the odds are in your favor.

Dr. Addagada Rao

Same day: Most of the time after hernia repair will go home on the same day, however complex abdominal hernias that require extensive reconstruction, or after removal severe adhesion s, or hernia requiring bowel resections, may require one day to few days. Most common inguinal hernia repair patients go home immediately after the procedure.

"thousands": Important variables include the type of repair, surgeon's cost, anesthesiologist's cost, hospital (or ambulatory surgery center's) cost, etc. Some states publish average costs per hospital per procedure (check out healthcarecompare in il). If you ask to meet with a hospital representative, they should be able to get a better estimate. Good luck.

Not as strong: Acellular dermal matrices can integrate and have excellent biological compatibilities however they are not as effective as mesh when it comes to providing structural integrity.
