do only premature babies have undescended testicles?

3 doctor answers7 doctors weighed in
Dr. Robert Kwok
Pediatrics 33 years experience
No: Term babies can have an undescended testicle. There is usually something wrong in the undescended testicle, related to why it did not descend. It may be smaller, and only partly functional. It also has a higher chance of cancer. However, preemies with undescended testicles probably have normal testicles but are just born before testicles are supposed to go into the scrotum in the 7th-8th months.
Dr. Faisal Qureshi
Pediatric Surgery 28 years experience
No: Undescended testis can be seen in full term children. The crucial part of the exam is whether it is retractile or truly undescended. Current recommendations are to repair undescended testis by the 1st year.
Dr. George Klauber
Specializes in Pediatric Urology
No: Approximately 3% of full-term baby boys have undesended testis at birth. 50 - 65% of these testes descend sponateously over the next 6 months. Up to 30% of premaure baies have undescended testes at birth and again most of these descend spontaneously during their first year. However, overall udts are more common in ex-preemies. Also more common inboys concieved by ivf.

Yes: Yes but...You need to make sure you are still getting plenty of calories. I'd recommend doing the common sense things - eating healthy foods, exercising, but not going crazy with calorie restriction.

What might cause early morning eye problems?

1 doctor answer3 doctors weighed in
Dr. Richard Bensinger
Ophthalmology 52 years experience
Eye drops: The most common early morning eye problem is due to overnight dryness. I am assuming that your vision clears quickly and you are comfortable most of the day and evening. If so, you can put a gel drop like theragel into your eyes at bedtime and this will coat and protect the eye and help in the morning. If the vision is bad or there is redness/pain, see your ophthalmologist.

How early must I teach my child healthy eating habits and how do I teach little ones?

Dr. Lisa Saponaro

Before they are born: Teaching your child healthy eating starts with our own healthy eating. Society provides a regular message to children that encourages eating unhealthy foods. Children's tv is littered with advertisements for sugary cereals and beverages and we have a growing rate of obesity among toddlers. Parents in today's society will have to work hard to provide healthy food messages, modeling is the key.

Yes.: That is exactly what underlies the neonatal respiratory distress syndrome - poor surfactant concentration leads to alveolar collapse in preemies. Prenatal Betamethasone helps prevent this complication.
