Do amniotic sac disorders cause birth defects?

1 doctor answer
Dr. Amy Herold
Specializes in Obstetrics and Gynecology
Yes: There is a very rare condition called amniotic band syndrome that occurs when the baby's body (usually limbs or digits) becomes trapped in fibrous bands of the amniotic sac. This causes constriction around the trapped body part and decreases blood flow. This process can lead to birth defects.

It is thought that the fetal digits occasionally scrape the amniotic sac.The glue like healing material that forms can be drawn out to create stringy bands that wind around forming structures, reducing blood flow, amputating digits or creating creases in structures.
