what does the bicuspid valve do in the heart?

Lots: I'm not sure what exactly you're referring to, but the typical valve with two leaflets is the mitral valve. It's usually not called "the bicuspid valve" though. A bicuspid aortic valve is a 2 leaflet aortic valve (should be 3) and is the most common congenital abnormality which can lead to aortic valve leaking or tightness later in life.

Also a bicuspid aortic valve has an increased risk of developing ascending aortic aneurysms. If you have a bicuspid aortic valve your cardiologist will follow the valve as well as the diameter of the ascendding aorta.

Abnormal: Bicuspid valve is an abnormal valve that may fail earlier -- and also is related to coarctation or thoracic aorta stenosis -- please see a cardiologist for evaluation.

A 24-year-old member asked:

What is the function of the bicuspid valve in the heart?

You mean malfunction: The aortic valve has 3 parts or leaflets. When its called bicuspid it has only 2 leaflets. This can be congenital or aquired. If two of the cusps fuse over time is called functional bicuspid vs congenital. Either way it creates an un natural flow across the valve and over time damage the valve. Most often the valve will need replace depending on age diagnosed. Most congen bicuspids will need repla.

3 or two cusps: The aortic, tricuspid, and pulmonic valves all have three cusps. The mitral valve is the only valve with two cusps.

Where is mitral bicuspid valve located in the heart?

Mitral Valve: Bicuspid mitral valve is redundant. The (normal) mitral valve is bicuspid and named after a bishop's miter, which it resembles. The valve is located between the left atrium and left ventricle. It opens during diastole to fill the ventricle and closes during systole to prevent blood from leaking back.

What is a 3rd degree heart block?

Bad stuff: Your heart rhythm is normally a carefully coordinated event that has a natural progression electrically to create an effective forceful heart beat. When you have 3rd degree block, it's completely discordant (ie nothing is working together) . When the different parts of the heart are doing their own thing without communicating properly, it's life threatening and requires a pacemaker

The same: There is no difference in the amount of work they do -it's just that one has 2 leaflets and the other 3.
