what can i do additonal for swelling on an infected thumb nail and how long should i give antibiotics before having it drained? my son slammed his thumb into a car door. after about a week the soarness went away, but the nail bed was damage. soon after

The : The most common cause after an injury such as this with swelling would be a fracture.
At times the swelling from a fracture persists, so get an x-ray
an ingection in the pulp or under the nail needs to be drained, antibioitic alone ( if the tissues are "pointing" why we sometimes refer to as a pregnant finger sign are typically not enough without surgical drainage
the combination of a fracture and and infection is dangerous and could lead to long term problems
