Hello. : Hello. In many areas the water standard for nitrate is 10 milligrams per liter (10 mg/l). The U.S. Environmental protection agency uses 10 mg/l as a standard for public supplies under the safe drinking water act. High nitrate levels in drinking water can cause methemologlobinemia in infants (blue baby syndrome).
