There : There are many reasons for ear pain, and quite a few causes are not related to the ear at all. It would be wise to have a good exam, including otoscopy, and a full head and neck evaluation. Infections of the middle (otitis media) and outer ear (otitis externa/swimmers ear) can cause pain. The pain from a middle ear infection is usually deeper, and does not cause pain when touching the ear. If you have no hearing loss, otitis media is unlikely, and otitis externa may cause hearing loss as well (although less often). Skin infections of the ear may also cause pain - however this is usually accompanied by redness, warmth, and swelling of the ear skin. It sounds like you may be suffering from a non-otologic cause of pain (not from the ear). Jaw joint disorders (tmj), dental problems, and even neck problems (arthritis, pinched nerves) may cause similar pains. These pains are usually centered over the front of the ear, near the jaw, but may extend behind the ear, these diseases may also cause severe sensitivity to loud sounds. It would be important to know if you have any pain chewing? Do you grind your teeth? Do you chew gum often? As stated above, an exam by a qualified otolaryngologist can usually quickly differentiate the causes of ear pain, and treatment may be quite straightforward. Hope this helps.

TMJ: See a dentist asap. You may be experiencing TMJ (temporal mandibular joint) pain. It may require treatment with medication , myofascial exercise, and/ or bite splint therapy.
