From : From your description it sounds like you are being treated for a small fiber peripheral neuropathy. I agree tegretol is a tough drug and there are others used to treat neuropathic pain such as neurontin, lyrica, (pregabalin) cymbalta...
You can wean the drug by 300 mg every week and then reassess before deciding on further treatment.
