How does smoking affect your lips?

Dr. Daniel Behroozan

Badly: Smoking affects "lip lines" in two ways: 1. The repetitive movement around the lips as a result of puckering repetitvely can lead to vertical lines around the mouth. 2. More importantly, smoking can lead to elastic fiber and collagen degeneration in the skin, which as a result, can lead to sagging and wrinkling of the perioral skin.

A 45-year-old member asked:

My lips sometimes take a pale or bluish color. Is this normal?

1 doctor answer1 doctor weighed in
Dr. Andrew Turrisi

Pallor (pale): Can be a reaction to cold and vasoconstriction to keep warm, or pallor can indicate anemia. Blue lips, cyanosis, can indicate lack of oxygenation, a sign of pulmoanry or heart problems. However, check with your doctor to figure this out rather than looking in the mirror.
