Something new?: This may or may not be a problem. What is important to know is the duration of this, history of prior periods in terms of length, amount, frequency and use of medications like oral contraceptives. Once that information is known, an obgyn doctor can better assess the cause and need, if any, to remedy the situation. Feel free to write another questions with a bit more information. Thanks for asking.

Should i go to the doctor if i've been having abnormally light periods for four months and what can be the cause

Light bleeding: Not all bleeding is a period. It could be that you haven't ovulated a few months and are just having breakthrough bleeding and not a period. You could be pregnant if you are sexually active. If on a birth control pill it could just be a normal side effect of the pill. It could also be new onset hypothyroid. Since its gone over three months, i would see a gynecologist.

LIght periods: The main reason for light periods is a change in hormone levels. Causes for what seems to be a light period can include: implantation bleeding in early pregnancy, thyroid problems, eating disorders, excessive exercise, initial periods for a girl, use of an intrauterine device, oral contraceptives & perimenopause.
