He needs seen: Hard black chunks may be a foreign body (or something like smoke inhalation) or may be dried blood from a nose-bleed, from lungs, or from bleeding ulcers from the stomach. This doesn't sound normal and he should see a doctor for evaluation.

For how long is coughing normal after quiting smoking?

Dr. Aaron Milstone answered
Pulmonology 27 years experience
2-3 months: Historically 2-3 months of increased cough can be associated with smoking cessation. Most physicians feel that the cilia (small hair cells lining the bronchial tubes) are recovering their function and helping to clear mucous from the deep airways.

Cough specialist: Either an allergist or a pulmonologist is specifically trained to diagnose the reason for cough and provide a treatment plan specifically for each person. There are many reasons for cough--don't wait for it to go away. See a specialist.
